The heating value of a liquefied methanecontaining gas, e.g. liquefied natural gas, is reduced by the following process:-the liquefied gas is vaporized at (1) by indirect heat-exchange with air which is partially liquefied and separated into two streams, respectively O 2 - and N 2 - rich; the O 2 -rich stream and a portion of the vaporized gas are passed to a zone (11) for partial combustion to produce a gas rich in H 2 and CO; this gas is mixed with some at least of the rest of the vaporized gas and a predetermined quantity of air, at (19). The ratio of the quantities of vaporized gas and O 2 -rich stream delivered to zone (11) is automatically controlled by a device (17) and the ratio of the quantities of air and vaporized gas passed to the mixing zone (19) is automatically controlled in accordance with the density and C.V. of the final gas measured at (24, 27). The zone (11) includes a nickel catalyst. A specific example is described and a flow diagram is provided. |
