Locator with multi-turn positioning

The encoder has a lighting device (9), and an optical sensor arrangement (13) for recording a multi-turn position of a shaft (4). The encoder comprises an energy saving mode during deactivation or failure of an external voltage supply. The encoder is designed to temporarily supply the lighting device with voltage in the energy saving mode. An evaluation unit (15) is arranged for evaluating the multi-turn position of the shaft. The sensor arrangement, the evaluation unit and/or a micro-controller (16) are supplied with the voltage in the energy saving mode. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a multi-turn position of a shaft.
