<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element having a high contrast ratio with small variation in plane by phase-compensating a VA mode liquid crystal panel. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element includes the VA mode liquid crystal panel 3, a pair of polarizing plates 2 and 3 arranged so that the transmission axes are orthogonal to each other, and a phase compensation element 6 consisting of two phase difference plates 4 and 5 arranged between the pair of polarizing plates. The optical axes of the two phase difference plates are orthogonal to each other. When it is assumed that the in-plane retardations between the phase difference plates are Rd(450), Rd(550) and Rd(650) at wavelengths of 450 nm, 550 nm and 650 nm, respectively, the relations of formula (1): Rd(450)/Rd(550)≤1.00 and formula (2): Rd(450)/Rd(650)≤1.00 are established. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
