PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle control device and a vehicle control method, preventing erroneous diagnosis of a degree of deterioration of a battery (an output performance of a battery). SOLUTION: The vehicle control device performs cranking by a polyphase AC motor to start an engine, and includes a battery deterioration estimation part estimating the degree of deterioration of the battery based on battery characteristics when a rotor is at a predetermined attitude angle, after the polyphase AC motor starts rotating (S6).
