Graphite or carbon bodies (esp., electrodes for aluminium electrolysis cells, or aluminium refining cells, or graphite moulds for casting refractory stones) are impregnated with an organoboron cpd. (pref. glycerol boric ester, or amyl or butyl borate) and heated, so that a protection coating of B4C3 to a molecular thickness is formed on pore walls. The reaction occurs at a much lower temp. than that normally required for the formation of B4C3. The oxidation corrosion of the graphite or carbon body is greatly reduced, and the compressive strength is considerably increased.
|
