<p>1329153 Electrolysis electrode SOLVAY ET CIE 17 Dec 1970 [9 Jan 1970] 60048/70 Heading C7B [Also in Division C1] An electrode for electro-chemical processes comprising a conductive and corrosion resistant support having a coating fixed on at least part of its surface which consists substantially of at least one oxide of ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium or platinum is made by impregnating the cleaned support with a layer of an anchoring material which comprises at least one oxidizable compound in the places where the coating is to be fixed, exposing the impregnated support to an atmosphere containing at least one compound of the above metals in the gaseous state which compound is decomposable into a stable and solid oxide on contact with the anchoring layer and subjecting the coated support to a heat treatment in an oxygen containing atmosphere between 200‹ and 550‹C. The support is preferably made of titanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum, tungsten or an alloy consisting mainly of at least one of these metals. The anchoring layer may contain aromatic compounds, olefins, alcohols, aldehydes, amides, ethers, sulphides, hydrides, plasticizers for polymers, oils, e.g. coriander oil, paraffins, silicone oils or silicone greases or mixtures of these substances. The anchoring layer may be applied in solution or dispersion by painting, swilling over the surface, spraying or dipping. The deposition of the stable solid oxide is preferably carried out at a temperature between 20 and 300‹ C. The sequence of impregnating the support, depositing the oxide and thermal treatment may be repeated several times and preferably in the last sequence of operations the thermal treatment is carried out immediately after the impregnation, omitting the intermediate stage of oxide deposition. The Examples describe the decomposition of gaseous ruthenium tetraoxide to form a black deposit of ruthenium dioxide on the electrode. The electrode is suitable for use (a) as an anode in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal halides, e. g. in producing Cl 2 , (b) in the manufacture of per-salts and (c) in the oxidation of organic compounds.</p> |
