To reduce the effect of, or to act as a deterrent to, the threat of piracy, the invention provides a portable safe-room 10 arranged to be inserted into a standard ISO shipping container, the safe-room comprising a floor, walls, and a ceiling, and further comprising armour plate 70 located on the outside of the safe-room 10 on at least one wall. The safe-room is for the ship's personnel to await rescue and avoid capture. The safe room can have a sealing means for providing an airtight compartment therein. Air treatment means can be provided including provision of oxygen. The safe room may include communication means, external monitoring means, and remote control means for controlling aspects of the ships facilities, for example for preventing the ships engine from driving the ship or preventing the ships steering means from steering the ship. The safe room may include GPS means to allow the safe rooms location to be tracked. |
