The method involves receiving infra-red intensity (130) or infra-red range (140) i.e. infra-red stripe, that represents an image of a surrounding area in front or behind a vehicle (100). The image is recorded in an infra red-wave length range or other wave length range that is non-visible by a human eye. Breadth and/or length of the infra-red intensity on a surface of objects (170, 180) in a surrounding area of the vehicle are determined. Distance of the objects from the vehicle is determined based on the determined breadth and/or length of the infra-red intensity or infra-red range. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device for implementing the method for determining distance of the object from the vehicle (2) a computer program product comprising program codes for determining distance of the object from a vehicle.
