SOLUTION: Before confirming that the response speed of an intake valve closing timing variable mechanism that is determined in a response speed determination process is a predetermined speed or more (when the determination at a step S56 is NO), the intake valve is closed within one of the late closing timing range and the early closing timing range in each cylinder cycle (step S55). When confirming that the response speed is a predetermined speed or more (when the determination of at a step S56 is YES), the late closing process, the early closing process, or the operation region transition process is performed depending on the engine operation state (step S60).
