PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely read a reading object by bringing the reading object into close contact with a reading part for optically reading a surface of the reading object, regardless of a size of the reading object. SOLUTION: This optical reader includes a surface scanner 111 for optically reading a surface of a card type recording medium Sb, and a carrying mechanism 100 for carrying the card type recording medium Sb to the surface scanner 111. The surface scanner 111 is constituted in a longitudinal shape, and is extended in the width direction of a carrying passage A for carrying the card type recording medium Sb by the carrying mechanism 100, and is energized toward the carrying passage A so as to approach the card type recording medium Sb positioned in the carrying passage A, and a recessed part 61 is arranged in a manual feeding port 15 continuing with the carrying passage A. for guiding the card type recording medium Sb to a position for passing through the center C in the width direction of the surface scanner 111.
