PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat treatment apparatus that can satisfactorily even out the temperature in a reaction vessel while shortening the time to fill the reaction vessel with superheated steam. SOLUTION: In the heat treatment apparatus 10 having the reaction vessel 20 in the form of a laid cylinder for heat-treating an object of treatment supplied thereinto through a supply opening 211 with superheated steam supplied from a superheated steam supply means 30 and discharging exhaust gas and solid matter resulting from the heat treatment through an exhaust opening 221 and a discharge opening 222 respectively, the superheated steam supply means 30 includes superheated steam distribution piping 31 extending axially of the reaction vessel 20, and superheated steam jet piping 32 spaced out axially of the reaction vessel 20 on the superheated steam distribution piping 31 to jet superheated steam in the superheated steam distribution piping 31 into the reaction vessel 20.
