<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reading apparatus in which reading productivity during a document mixed loading mode is improved, and user friendliness is improved. <P>SOLUTION: The document reading apparatus 500 determines a document width from detection information of a document width detecting sensor 17 and a feed guide regulating plate 18 (S10). A maximum fixed size is determined as a temporary document size from the width information and a document length based on detection information of a tray size detecting first sensor 10 and a tray size detecting second sensor 11 (S11). The document reading apparatus 500 measures a period of time in the timing from ON to OFF of a post-separation sensor 12 to measure an actual document length, and determines an actual document size (S14). When the temporary document size is equal to the actual document size, the document reading apparatus continues image reading.
