A METHOD FOR DETERMINING THE LOCATION OF AN INTERFACE REGION IN A MEDIUM AND ASSOCIATED APPARATUS

Apparatus and methods for determining the location of an interface region are described. Such an interface region may be defined between first and second layers in a multi-layered medium (e.g. an interface region defined between oil and water layers in a pipeline). In some examples, the location is determined by using a time of flight of an interface signal having been communicated across a transmission path of known distance passing through the multi-layered medium having the first layer, second layer and the interface region, together with the speed of the interface signal in the first layer and the speed of the interface signal in the second layer in order to provide for determining the location of the interface region along the transmission path. Such determination may be for use with flow meters, such as oil, gas and/or water flow meters.
