PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method of a chemical reaction wherein a substituent having a hetero atom at an alpha position of a carbonyl group is substituted by a hydrogen atom under a mild condition. SOLUTION: The method comprises treating an organic compound having a carbonyl group, and a group selected from the group consisting of a halogen atom, SR<SP>c</SP>, SeR<SP>d</SP>, SOR<SP>e</SP>, SO<SB>2</SB>R<SP>f</SP>, OR<SP>g</SP>, and OSO<SB>2</SB>R<SP>h</SP>which resides at an alpha position of the carbonyl group, with a trivalent chromium compound, and with at least one metal selected from the group consisting of manganese and zinc in a solvent in the presence of at least one compound selected from the group consisting of a compound represented by following formula (II), and a compound represented by following formula (II'). Thereby, an organic compound wherein a group selected from the group consisting of a halogen atom, SR<SP>c</SP>, SeR<SP>d</SP>, SOR<SP>e</SP>, SO<SB>2</SB>R<SP>f</SP>, OR<SP>g</SP>, and OSO<SB>2</SB>R<SP>h</SP>which resides at an alpha position of the carbonyl group is substituted by hydrogen is produced.
