PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of an elevator capable of detecting a string-like foreign substance with a small diameter or tape-like string-like foreign substance, saving the trouble of maintenance, preventing damage to a design property, and allowing a passenger to cope with speedily when the foreign substance is detected. SOLUTION: The safety device of the elevator includes a light emitting device 8 arranged between a car side door 1 and the sill 2 thereof, and a landing side door and the sill thereof, and emitting light linearly throughout the width of a doorway, a camera 10 installed in the upper part of the doorway, and an image processing means 11 for processing an image taken in by this camera. The light emitting device is made to emit light, the image containing a sill surface and a door front end surface is taken in by the camera, and an area lightened by the light of the light emitting device is extracted by the image processing means.
