PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for an internal combustion engine suppressing vibration of the internal combustion engine at the time of automatic stop and maintaining good exhaust emission characteristics by preventing an air fuel ratio from getting over-rich. SOLUTION: The control device for the internal combustion engine directly injecting fuel into a combustion chamber 3c and automatically stopping the internal combustion engine 3 when prescribed stop conditions are satisfied is provided. An intake shutter 8 for adjusting intake air quantity is disposed in an intake pipe 5 of the internal combustion engine 3. The control device controls the intake shutter 8 to a close side when the prescribed stop conditions are satisfied (step 14) to control intake air quantity to a reduction direction, and stop fuel injection injecting fuel to the combustion chamber 3c is executed (step 17). Fuel injection quantity QINJ is controlled to keep air fuel ratio of air fuel mixture not less than a prescribed air fuel ratio according to a relation with detected intake air pressure PBA (step 19, 23, step 21).
