PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect the weight of laundry articles in a rotary tub regarding whether the weight may be heavy or light. SOLUTION: The washing machine is provided with: the rotary tub into which the laundry articles are supplied; a motor the rotary shaft of which is directly connected with the rotary tub; a permanent magnet which is inserted to the rotor core of a rotor constituting the motor and has coercive force of a level where magnetization can easily be changed; and a magnetization amount control means which varies the magnetization of the permanent magnet by making the coil of a stator constituting the motor generate an excitation current; and a weight detection means detecting the weight of the laundry articles in the rotary tub. The weight detection means detects as the first step the weight while the magnetization of the permanent magnet is increased by the magnetization amount control means (step A1). When the weight is a threshold or less (step A2: NO), the weight detection means detects as the second step the weight while the magnetization of the permanent magnet is decreased by the magnetization amount control means (step A8).
