A method for a terminal management system updating terminal status is provided in the present invention. The technical solution includes: receiving a Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) connection response message from the terminal which is managed by the terminal management system; determining that the terminal which transmits the response message is in the online status according to the connection response message; updating the terminal status according to the obtained status of the managed terminal. A terminal management system is also provided in the present invention. By using the technical solution in the present invention, the online and offline status of the terminal can be exactly updated in real time, the passivity problem of the prior art is solved that the terminal status is updated relying on the way that the terminal device reports actively in a fixed period, the capability overhead of the terminal management system can be reduced, and the system efficiency is improved without affecting the normal service operation.
