PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress HC emissions discharged into the atmosphere when an engine is cold.
SOLUTION: An HC trap catalyst having a function of trapping HC (hydrocarbon) in exhaust gas is disposed in the exhaust passage of a diesel engine, and the internal combustion engine is operated in a temperature raising mode purposefully raising exhaust gas temperature of the internal combustion engine in order to raise the temperature of the catalyst when the engine is cold. The predicted value HCout_c of the HC emissions discharged from the HC trap catalyst when the internal combustion engine is operated in the temperature raising mode in the future and the predicted value HCout_n of the HC emissions discharged from the HC trap catalyst when the internal combustion engine is operated in a normal mode with fewer HC emissions from the internal combustion engine than the temperature raising mode in the future are respectively calculated based on the condition of the HC trap catalyst during acceleration of the engine when the engine is cold (S31, S32). Then, it is determined whether the internal combustion engine is operated in the temperature raising mode or the normal mode based on the comparison of both the predicted values with each other (Step S33).
COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
