The device (4) has a counter (5) for counting number of periods of a signal in a fixed period and determining an estimate frequency of the signal. A scanning device (6) is provided for scanning the signal and determining a scanned signal. An analysis unit (8) determines a frequency spectrum of the scanned signal. An evaluation unit (9) determines a strongest frequency line of the frequency spectrum in a fixed frequency range around the estimate frequency, where frequency of the signal is determined depending on the determined strongest frequency line.
