The seal has an optically readable marking designed as a barcode (2) and directly formed on a material of the seal. The barcode is formed in two-dimension with a matrix-like sample, where the barcode corresponds to a character string characterizing the seal. Areas of the barcode are assigned to different parameters of the seal. The barcode is arranged in sections outside sealing surfaces (1) of the seal. The barcode is partially arranged at a separable molding. The barcode is produced by local change of a surface structure of the seal by laser or chemical treatment. An independent claim is also included for a method for marking and identifying a static flat seal.
