<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas which demonstrates high cleaning performance of NOx. <P>SOLUTION: This catalyst for cleaning an exhaust gas includes a catalytic layer composed of an upper layer 2 and a lower layer 3 formed on a cellular wall 1 of a honeycomb carrier. In addition, the upper layer 2 and the lower layer 3 each contain an NOx occlusion material and a catalytic metal, and at least either the upper layer 2 or the lower layer 3 contains a ZrW composite oxide involving a Zr ion and a W ion.
