<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character input device and a character input method which can convert recognized characters into new characters by performing Kana-Kanji conversion on a character string generated by character recognition. <P>SOLUTION: The character input device includes an imaging part 11 which obtains an image, a display 13 which displays the image obtained by the imaging part 11, an input part 12 which specifies a particular range in the image displayed on the display 13, a character recognition part 14 which recognizes a character contained in the range designated by the input part 12, a storage part 15 which stores the character recognized by the character recognition part 14, and a character conversion part 16 which obtains (all) characters stored in the storage part 15 to determine conversion candidates and displays the conversion candidates on the display 13.
