The starter has a starting-switching unit (SE) opening and closing a main stream path (HP) between a battery (B) and a starter motor (M). The main stream path is formed such that different total resistance of two partial main stream paths (HP A, HP B) is adjustable by controlling a switching unit (S1) using a control electronic system (E) during a starting process between the battery and the starter motor. The switching unit is controllable such that the total resistance lies in the main and partial stream paths when closing the main stream path. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a starter.
