Smelting apparatus comprises a converter 11, a solid material injection lance 31 that extends downwards and inwards through the side wall of the converter 11, a track 40 that extends upwards and outwards from the side wall of the converter, carriages 42 44 with a carriage drive 46 that move the carriages 42 44 along the track 40. The carriages 42 44 can be connected to the lance 31, so that the lance 31 is supported by and moved along the track 40 thus allowing the lance 31 to be inserted into or extracted from the converter 11.
