<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic key system and a key authentication method allowing a user to use a new electronic key without requiring the user to perform complicated and troublesome setting work even if algorithm for authenticating electronic key is changed due to replacement of an electronic key system on one side when sharing one electronic key among, for example, a plurality of electronic key systems and to use this key as before as a key of the electronic key system on the other side. <P>SOLUTION: In this electronic key system 3 collating by challenge response authentication between a house 1 and the electronic key 2, cipher algorithm is deleted from a collation ECU 4 for the house, and a fixed random number code 26 is skipped as challenge from the house 1.
