The folding rule (10) has lighting elements (18) i.e. LEDs, designed for illuminating a surrounding. The lighting elements are operated by a battery or solar power. A switching device switches-on or switches-off the lighting elements and is in the form of a sliding switch, push-button, electrically controlled switch or press switch. Joining parts (12) are connected with each other using a rivet (16). A clock is provided at an upper side of the folding rule. The lighting elements are arranged at longitudinal sides (20) of the joining parts and are spaced from each other at a distance.
