PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image enlargement method, an image enlargement apparatus and an image forming apparatus, capable of obtaining image data after enlargement (resolution conversion) by a linear interpolation method by keeping a symmetric property of image data. SOLUTION: When resolution conversion is applied to image data by interpolation to enlarge an image, virtual pixel data not included in image data inputted before and after image data existing at both ends of any input pixel string of left, right, upper and lower ones of an image to be enlarged is set. A position of a first output pixel is determined so that a difference between a position of the first input pixel and the position of the first output pixel equals a difference between a position of the last input pixel and a position of a last output pixel in accordance with an enlargement scale factor. Output pixel data before the position of the first input pixel is operated by interpolation based on the previously set virtual pixel data and pixel data of the position of the first input pixel. Output pixel data after the position of the last input pixel is operated by interpolation based on the subsequently set virtual pixel data and pixel data of the position of the last input pixel.
