PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imidazole compound having a phenyl group substituted in the ortho position at the 2- or 5-position. SOLUTION: An imidazole compound wherein the 2- or 5-position is substituted by a halogen atom or a sulfonate group is reacted with a boron compound represented by formula (5) (wherein X is a halogen atom, a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, a sulfonate group or an acetate group; R<SP>4</SP>is a hydrogen atom, an optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl or alkenyl group, a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, a carboxy group, an ester group, a formyl group, a cyano group, an amino group, a nitro group, a sulfonate group or an acetate group; Z is a hydroxy group or an alkoxy group; and n is an integer of 0-4).
