<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a building materials capable of preventing a building material substrate (in particular, organic base material) from being eroded and achieving excellent weather resistance, excellent toxic gas decomposition power, satisfactory characteristics for suppressing the propagation of mold and algae and enabling various desirable coatings (ultraviolet ray absorbing performance, transparency, coating strength or the like), and preventing the occurrence of a problem wherein a photocatalyst layer develops color when forming the coating. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the building material, the photocatalyst layer containing photocatalyst particles of 1 wt.% or more and less than 20 wt.%, inorganic oxide particles of above 70 wt.% and less than 99 wt.%, ionized copper, and ionized silver, is formed on the building material substrate. A compounding ratio of the ionized copper and the ionized silver in the photocatalyst layer is more than 0.5 wt.% and not more than 5 wt.% for the photocatalyst particles in total amount obtained through conversion to Ag<SB>2</SB>O and CuO.
