PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new pathogenic adenovirus separated from the eye of a patient who suffers from follicular conjunctivitis and to provide a method of assaying the adenovirus. SOLUTION: The above antigenic and pathogenic new adenovirus is separated from the conjunctiva of the patient who suffers from follicular conjunctivitis and neutralized weakly by an antiserum against adenovirus type 8 prototype or type 9 prototype but not by an antiserum against adenovirus type 1-7 prototypes, type 10 prototype, type 11 prototype, type 14 prototype, type 19 prototype, type 22 prototype, type 34 prototype, type 35 prototype, type 37 prototype, type 40 prototype or type 41 prototype and causes conjunctiva hyperemia and follicular conjunctivitis on human beings. The amino acid sequence in the high-degree mutation domain of the hexon of the adenovirus contains the amino acid sequence represented by sequence number 1 in the sequence table or the amino acid sequence in which one or plural amino acid residues are substituted, deleted, inserted or added to the amino acid sequence represented by sequence number 1. |
