The stove top has multiple heating elements arranged in a grid, and has a cover plate (12). A control unit (18) is designed to form flexible defined heating zones (20,22,26) of one or multiple heating elements depending on a size and position of the cookware elements positioned on the cover plate. The cover plate has a marking (24), which visualizes the position of the heating zone provided for small cookware elements.
