The method involves lifting a box stack (11) using a fluid so that a toppest box (12) reaches a defined height. The toppest box is removed from the box stack, where the fluid is provided as water or cleaning fluid. A gas stream is supplied to the fluid. The fluid is guided back into an auxiliary tank (21) for filling a tank (10), after removal of a lowest box (14). The box stack floats in the fluid, and a floater causes additional buoyancy under the box stack. The fluid flows into the tank and lifts the box stack after closing the tank. An independent claim is also included for a device for unstacking a box.
