PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a communication system in which band utilization efficiency is improved by reducing useless band allocation. SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a communication system wherein an ONU 2 transmits a buffer amount notice including its own buffer amount to an OLT 1 and the OLT 1 performs band allocation to the ONU 2 on the basis of the buffer amount notice. The ONU 2 includes: a buffer for storing transmission data for each queue and a buffer amount notice generating section for determining an individual buffer amount for a predetermined unit on the basis of the buffer amount for each queue stored in the buffer and determining a cumulative value by adding two or more individual buffer amounts, and transmits the cumulative value while including it in the buffer amount notice and the OLT 1 performs band allocation on the basis of the cumulative value.
