<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress degrading of an A/F (air fuel ratio) sensor and to suppress firing of exhaust gas in an exhaust manifold. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The control device 1 of the engine 10 includes a heater 3 for warming up a sensor element of the A/F sensor 2, an intake valve control mechanism 6 for controlling an intake valve 4 and an exhaust valve control mechanism 7 for controlling an exhaust valve 5 and an ECU (electronic control unit) 8 for controlling the intake valve control mechanism 6 and the exhaust valve control mechanism 7 and for heating the heater 3. The ECU 8 adds a short trip operation counter value based on a final temperature of engine cooling water of previous engine operation, a temperature of the engine cooling water on starting and an engine operation time on switching off ignition and stops the engine by bringing the intake valve 4 and the exhaust valve 5 to their valve close states in the case that the short trip operation counter value exceeds a reference value c1.
