PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hybrid construction machine which can continue an operational state even if assistance from a motor generator cannot be obtained. SOLUTION: The hybrid construction machine includes: a hydraulic pump which is driven by an internal combustion engine; the motor generator which assists the drive of the internal combustion engine for the hydraulic pump; a drive control section which controls the drive of the motor generator, and constitutes a motor generator system together with the motor generator; a capacitor which supplies electric power to the motor generator; a storage control section which controls the charging/discharging of the capacitor, and constitutes a charging/discharging system together with the capacitor; an abnormality detecting section which is provided in the motor generator system or the charging/discharging system, and detects an abnormality in the motor generator system or the charging/discharging system; and a controller which sends a control command to the drive control section and the storage control section. The controller comprises an assist abnormality determination section which determines that the assist abnormality occurs according to a detection value in the abnormality detecting section, and an engine failure prevention section which keeps an upper limit value of an output of the internal combustion engine higher than an output value of the hydraulic pump when the assist abnormality determination section determines that the assist abnormality occurs.
