PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of automatically aligning and merging acquired 3D models in the way that gives a feeling of real-time display to a viewer. SOLUTION: The method includes: a step 120 of connecting to a storage medium storing a set of 3D range data and a set of 2D image data corresponding to the 3D range data; a step 122 of displaying points representing the set of 3D range data on a monitor; a step 124 of dividing the set of 3D range data into four groups respectively including a consecutive set of 3D range data; a step of aligning, in each of the groups, a pair of consecutive range data by use of the set of 2D image data, and updating corresponding 3D range data; a step of updating the points displayed on the monitor in accordance with the alignment; a step 128 of repeating the aligning and updating steps until all 3D range data are aligned in each of the groups; and a step 130 of aligning all sets of 3D range data registered and updated during the step of repeating.
