<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display an image in a wide luminance dynamic range. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A projection system includes a projector PJ1 and a screen. The projector PJ1 includes: light sources 100R, 100G and 100B for generating light having first, second and third color components; a color image light generation unit 200 for modulating the light having the first, second and third color components on the basis of image data corresponding to the image to be projected to thereby generate color image light; a light source 300 for generating ultraviolet light; a luminance image light generation unit 400 for modulating the ultraviolet light on the basis of the luminance component of the image data to thereby generate a luminance image light; and a synthesis optical system 500 for synthesizing the color image light, which is generated by the color image light generation unit 200, with the luminance image light generated by the luminance image light generation unit 400.
