PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phase difference detection device detecting a phase difference between phases in an image exposure position and in an image transfer position, of periodical rotational fluctuation in the rotational direction of an image carrier, and to provide an image forming apparatus using the phase difference detection device. SOLUTION: The phase difference detection device is constituted so that a pattern for detecting the phase difference formed on a recording medium by a pattern forming means is visually detected or a pattern for detecting the phase difference formed on an intermediate transfer body is detected by a detection means, to detect the phase difference between the phases in the image exposure position and in the image transfer position, of the periodical image displacement in the rotational direction of the image carrier.
