<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce possibility of contact of a head slider and magnetic disk and regulate erosion/corrosion of the magnetic disk due to a current when in contact. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An HDD adjusts common potential of a magnetoresistive element so as to lower the potential difference between the magnetic disk and head slider. The common potential is a midpoint potential for magnetoresistive element's performance. The HDD measures a floating height of the head slider at different levels of common potential, and determines a proper common potential of the element from the measured result. The HDD sets the common potential where the floating height of the head slider is predicted to become highest, resulting in reduction of the possibility of the contact of the head slider and magnetic disk by lowering the potential difference between the head slider and magnetic disk and further regulation of the erosion/corrosion of the magnetic disk by the current when in the contact.
