<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide technology for stopping a cam at a position keeping an intake valve in a closed state in a valve system for an internal combustion engine in which the cam rotated or rocked by a motor independent from the internal combustion engine opens and closes the valve. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the valve system for the internal combustion engine in which the cam rotated or rocked by the motor independent from the internal combustion engine opens and closes the intake valve, if a cylinder in which the cam does not stop at a position keeping the intake valve in the closed state exists when valve deactivation demand for deactivating the intake valve in the closed state is raised, stop of the cam is tried after continuing operation of the cylinder by at least one cycle.
