Apparatus for removing sludge 30 from a bed 11 comprises a carriage mounted to traverse a supporting structure movable lengthwise on the walls of the bed. The carriage has a slat elevator 21 running in an open-bottomed vertical casing 18 which has a sludge-digging member 29 mounted on the bottom which can be pivoted to operate in either direction of carriage movement. The slat conveyer is reversible and discharges on to one of two crossconveyers 28 which take the sludge to a conveyer on the supporting structure for discharge beyond the side of the bed. In operation, as the digger 29 reaches a side wall a limit switch stops the carriage, the easing raising motor is started to raise the casing 18 and by a suitable linkage reverse the digger 29, then the casing is lowered after the apparatus has been moved lengthwise of the bed and the carriage and elevator are re-started in the reverse direction. In a modification the whole elevator assembly is mounted on a turn-table on the carriage. |
