<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for making a material made into a shape of a molded article, a shaped body, a granule or a compacted particle usable as a sand for toilet for animal hygiene, having high-degree hydrophobicity and good surface smoothness, and not dissolving in a moist condition. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The sand for the toilet for the animal hygiene is in the shape of the molded article, the granule or the compact based on cellulose, and made by a pressure forming process, wherein the material of the molded article contains a sizing agent, preferably an alkyl ketene dimer as a hydrophobing agent, and free from a binder.
