A user interface is controlled by the steps of: defining a selection set of selected objects, selecting an object, and determining a state of a mode of operation, wherein in a first state any selected object forms the selected set, and in a second state any selected object is added to or moved from the selection set. Also disclosed is positioning a cursor over a displayed object and dragging the cursor; and determining a state of a mode of operation, wherein: in a first state, the object under the cursor is dragged with the cursor; and in a second state, a selection area is dragged with the cursor.
