A membrane electrode assembly for a fuel cell, comprises a planar polymer membrane (11) which is coated with an electrode structure (12,13) on both sides. The membrane is connected to a sealing element (14) on one side, and the sealing element extends tangentially inwards to a transition area. The latter lies between the outer and inner area, where it overlaps the electrode structures on both sides of the polymer membrane.
