<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control an amount of ink discharged out of recording paper to a minimum by accurately detecting an end position of the recording paper printed up to the end by frameless printing or the like during printing. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A pattern for reflection level measurement is printed to the same recording paper as the recording paper to which printing is actually carried out, and a calculation table whereby a threshold value according to an ink color and a placement amount can be obtained by reading the pattern is formed. The threshold value is determined on the basis of printing data near the end of the recording paper and the calculation table during printing. Detection of the paper end position is thus carried out.
