PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide systems and techniques with respect to the configuration of an ad-hoc network. SOLUTION: A module or communication device 202 is configured to listen for a period of time for an incoming pilot signal from a remote terminal 104 that exceeds a threshold power level for the purpose of acquiring such an incoming pilot signal and operating under control of the remote terminal 104, and operating regardless of the remote terminal 104 if such a pilot signal is not detected within the period of time, such independent operation including transmitting a pilot signal.
