<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent error detection in misfire detection caused by a resonance phenomenon, in a misfire detection device for an internal combustion engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A pattern of distribution in engine speed fluctuation during a fixed period is analyzed. Normal combustion, misfire during resonance, rough road, and misfire without resonance are determined depending on which pattern of a combustion pattern, a resonance pattern, a rough road pattern and a misfire pattern the analyzed distribution patter of rotation fluctuation the analyzed pattern fits to.
