<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device which excels in reliability. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The projection type image display device has: a light source 101, an optical modulation element 130G or the like modulating intensity distribution of light from the light source 101 in accordance with an image signal; a projection optical system 170 for projecting the light modulated by the optical modulation element 130G or the like; a ventilation mechanism 205 forming air flow for cooling the optical modulation element 130G or the like; and a holding member 150G or the like for holding the optical modulation element 130G or the like. The holding member 150G or the like is equipped with a cooling element 200G or the like for cooling the air flow that flows around the holding member 150G or the like through the holding member 150G or the like, and the air flow cooled through the holding member 150G or the like is sent to the optical modulation element 130G or the like.
