<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology for easily storing image data in a distributed manner on a network and for easily using image data stored on the network. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A scanner 14 reads an image and issues an image acceptance request by multicast to respective file servers 16, 18, and 20 (S2). When the first file server 16 first responds to the acceptance request (S3), image data transmitted by the scanner 14 are stored and the scanner 14 is notified of image deletion (S5). The scanner 14 deletes image data temporarily stored (S6) and issues the acceptance request of the next read image by multicast (S8).
